The season 1988–89 of the European Cup football club tournament was won for the first time since 1969, and third time overall, by AC Milan comfortably in the final against former winners Steaua Bucureşti. It was one of the most one-sided final since the replayed final in 1974.

PSV, the defending champions, were eliminated by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

¹ Milan progressed to the Quarter-finals after winning a 4-2 penalty shoot-out.
² Second leg in Belgrade was actually replayed. The original second leg match in Belgrade was stopped by German referee Dieter Pauly due to thick fog with Red Star leading 1-0. The match was then voided and replay was ordered since due to extremely poor visibility it was decided that the match couldn't continue that day. The replay took place the very next day and it ended in the above 1-1 scoreline.

The game was replayed from the beginning the next day at 3 p.m. with the same starting line-ups, with the exception of Milan players Pietro Paolo Virdis and Carlo Ancelotti; Virdis had been sent off in the abandoned match, while Ancelotti picked up his second yellow card of the competition, meaning that he had to sit out a match.
