The season 1988–89 of the European Cup football club tournament was won for the first time since 1969, and third time overall, by AC Milan comfortably in the final against former winners Steaua Bucureşti. It was one of the most one-sided final since the replayed final in 1974.

PSV, the defending champions, were eliminated by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

1 Milan progressed to the Quarter-finals after winning a 4-2 penalty shoot-out.
2 Second leg in Belgrade was actually replayed. The original second leg match in Belgrade was stopped by German referee Dieter Pauly due to thick fog with Red Star leading 1-0. The match was then voided and replay was ordered since due to extremely poor visibility it was decided that the match couldn't continue that day. The replay took place the very next day and it ended in the above 1-1 scoreline.
